Plans are underway to ensure food security in the Galle district. The food security committee which is a sub committee of the District Coordinating Committee was held today (04th ) for the first time in the auditorium of the District Secretariat Galle.
It was held under the chairmanship of District Secretary ,W.A. Dharmasiri and the Secretary of Ministry of Provincial Agriculture, Mr. Chandima Weerakkody.
The District Food Security Committee should function to ensure food security for the people of the Galle District by developing food production, distribution, market infrastructure and accessibility, ensuring access to clean water, sanitation, nutritious food, and nutrition education, and by planning and implementing measures to maintain stability in food production and supply in the face of climate changes, disasters, economic crises, and conflicts.
The special tasks assigned to the committee consist of preparing security plans for the food production areas of the district, maintaining a data and information system, submitting forecast reports related to food production, identifying the need for seedlings and animals (young animals) for food production in the district, preparing the district agricultural land use plan, and coordinating special government programs related to food production.
The District Secretary, Mr .W.A. Dharmasiri delivered the welcome speech and explained the objective of this program and stated that the Food Security Committee established under Home Affairs Circular 03/2025 will function by carrying out monitoring activities to ensure the food requirements of the people in the Galle District.
Special attention was also drawn to the quantitative and qualitative production of vegetables, fruits, and livestock products in the district.
Additional District Secretary (Administration) Mrs. Ayesha Kariyawasam, Additional District Secretary (Lands and Development) Miss. G.G. Lakshmi Kanthi, District Director of Planning Mr. Rasanga Suriarachchi, District Director of Agriculture(Act.) Ms. Thamara Munasinghe, heads of institutions related to the agricultural sector, Divisional Secretaries, and several others participated in this occasion.
Additional District Secretary Galle (Lands and Development) Miss. G.G. Lakshmi Kanthi serves as the convener of this programme, while the Lands and Development Division organized the event.
